phone works fine but maybe a battery situation?
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
With the first phone i received, the handset didn’t work and i couldn’t hear the other person though they could hear me. AT&T customer service checked it out and determined that it needs to be returned.
amazon sent me another one the next day.
im still working out all the functions but so far the speakerphone is terrific.
some of the options are not terribly user friendly so you really do have to read the handbook to figure out a bunch of things. fortunately the handbook is mostly easy to understand.
now my biggest concern is with the battery.
i think it would be really helpful to find out from others if they have experience with how long a battery can keep this telephone working if the electric cord is not plugged in.
i tried using a new radio shack 9 volt battery without plugging in the cord.
and both battery and the phone were not working by morning.
when i plugged the electric back in, the phone worked fine.
the point is, i don’t know if it’s the battery, OR, if it’s the telephone using up internal electricity. which in the latter case would obviously be a detriment if we wanted to use this phone during a black out.
it’s still unclear to me if the phone works at all without electricity. though other commenters have said that it does, i have just not seen this yet.
i will try again and return to update as soon as i try another battery and have to unplug the electric again.
AT&T suggested the Energizer battery by the way.
overall the phone is good and has a really clear caller ID .

Excellent Phone
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have the older model of this phone and it still works great. I needed another so I bought the 993. Buttons are large and very easy to use. Speakerphone is loud and clear. For around $50 its a very good phone.

Great Buy
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
haven’t owned lots of office phones, but i like it better than i thought i would. For me the most important thing was having buttons that were large enough not to miss when dialing. I also don’t like phones that have stiff buttons. This phone accomplished both for me. The buttons are responsive and hard to miss.

Near-perfect Phone
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Not much to add here to what others have said. I am like the person who wanted a corded phone with both speakerphone and headset capabilities for my home office. I am a technical trainer who does most of my assignments from home over the internet. It is common to get a call and have to look up some technical documents or check a software feature. These calls can last 15-30 minutes so the headset capability was my main goal. And this phone delivers…almost. That is, the headset feature works, but the sound comes through with lower-than-normal voices. Even at max volume on my headset, it is barely enough. But, for the price and feature set, this phone is great in other respects.

Merely adequate
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
You get what you pay for, I guess. I got this for my home office, and Amazon’s price was good. The phone works but you have to dial slowly and carefully. The number won’t register unless you press it firmly, and then it will easily double dial. Makes it hard to use the keypad to, for example, enter your credit card number. Sound quality is fine, and the second line works pretty seamlessly.

Fails the Basics
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I’ve owned this phone for 8 months now, using it in a home office. I won’t disagree with other reviewers that this phone has great features for the money, etc. However, that doesn’t matter to me because the phone fails in its fundamental purpose: being a telephone.
The speakerphone is lousy. The mic is overly sensitive to sounds coming from the phone itself (e.g., the conversation you presumably want to hear) and cuts out the speaker so you lose a lot of clarity. You can mitigate this by sticking some tape or a yellow-sticky over the mic (and speaker) but then it makes it hard for people to hear you. You can also mute the phone but that can be a hassle if you’re actively participating in the conversation.
The other annoyance is that the number pad can’t keep up with my dialing speed. I’ll punch in a number, see clearly in the display that it was the correct number, and will be unable to connect. Same with conference call pass codes. You have to type the numbers more slowly for it to keep up. Not sure if there are better options but knowing what I know, I would not buy this phone again.
On the bright side, if you never use a speaker phone, and you’re a slow dialer, this might be a great phone for you.

Best phone….
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I recently purchased 3 phones, the at&t 993, a panasonic kxts600, and panasonic kxts105 which has no caller id. They were all rated quite good, and are somewhat similar desk phones. The 993 comes with a dc power supply, and has 2 lines. The panasonics are battery powered. In my opinion the 993 is in a whole different league than the panasonics, as well as other phones that I own. It has far better sound quality, much faster operation, it has a larger easier to read screen, and it is a bit heavier so it just feels better. It does not have that annoying hollow sound that you get with the cheaper units. It is by far my phone of choice, a good value, and I just ordered another. Good day.

good phone lots of features
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Good value lots of features takes a bit to set up and the speaker phone works well. Only draw back I find is that the caller ID view lays to flat and when the phone rings you have to stand up to see who’s calling-otherwise I love the phone.

Like having an office phone at home
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have a home office and spend a LOT of time on the phone, so much so that I actually wear out headsets and have to replace them every few months. Having a “professional” quality phone is extremely important to me.
The AT&T 993 looks and works as close to an office phone as you can get. People I call tell me they could tell an immediate difference in voice quality. That’s important.
But it is the user-interface that make me like this phone more than any other I have used. The control buttons are logically placed and work solidly. While I rarely use the handset, I often switch from headset to speakerphone and back and AT&T has made that process logical and convenient. You can preset if you want the phone to default to handset, headset or speakerphone when you answer, and for me I often wear the headset most of the day and I can answer by touching only one button. By the way, having a headset jack on the phone was a #1 priority for me, and AT&T wisely placed it on the lower right so the cord doesn’t get in the way.
The one-touch direct dial buttons are logical and have a fairly sophisticated method of chaining numbers so I can call virtually anyone programmed in with one touch. The way additional numbers are stored in a directory works well, too. You can vary the speed at which you can scroll through the names to suit your personal preference.
The phone has more than adequete volume for both incomming and outgoing calls and it is very easy to adjust while you are on a call. The speakerphone is very high quality and does not have a “tunnel effect”.
The various indicator lights give you a lot of information about line status, missed calls and voicemail messages.
What are the cons? I would have preferred to have a dedicated voicemail button rather than have to dedicate a direct-dial button to voicemail. Also, the LCD display can either be turned on or turned off. The display is hard to see with it off, but if you turn it on it stays on all the time. It would make more sense to have it light when a call is coming in or when you push any button. It would also be nice to be able to adjust the brightness.
I agree with the other reviewers who mention the “beep” the keys make when you are dialing. You can’t turn the beep off or adjust its volume. Personally I like having a beep of some type to assure me that I pressed the key properly (I’m often dialing by touch rather than looking) but I would like it to be a very subtle sound.
The “look” of the phone is entirely the owner’s personal taste, but for me it looks like a quality piece of office equipment. That might have a slight influence for some people like me who want their home office environment to look professional.
The documentation is excellent, far more detailed than you would expect for a phone of this price, and crystal clear in how setup and operation instructions.
This is a phone that I highly recommend as a top value.

ATT 993 is a good choice
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this phone because it has autoredial. This is such a nice hands free feature. This was the only phone I could find with it.
The buttons are big, its easy to program the phone settings and it’s affordable. Persoanlly I wish ATT would include a 25 foot handset cord instead of the short one that came from the factory.

I love this phone!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This phone replaced a very old similar-style AT&T phone in our house that decided it wasn’t going to play nice with our new Verizon FIOS service (high pitched static). I needed a good quality main phone with speed dial, caller ID and speaker phone for home use. The 993 phone is much better quality than I expected – they make things so cheaply these days so I was surprised. It’s a good sturdy phone that’s got a good weight to it. It was easy to set up and the manual was easy to follow. I like the big number buttons. Sound quality is good and speaker phone seems to work just fine. Caller ID box is bright and easy to read (you do have to get somewhat close to it). Scrolling through the call history is easy enough. We are using this phone with only ONE LINE even though it is a two line phone – and this wasn’t a problem (I checked the online manual first to make sure it would work that way). I did a lot of research before deciding on the 993 – I am very happy with my purchase!

Good phone, but one perplexing issue.
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I was looking for a solid speakerphone with no answering device or unnecessary frills. This phone fits the bill. It is of substantial weight, feels sturdy, and the feature set is easy to use. I will probably buy more of them as I expand my office.
There is one issue which I can’t figure out. Right now there is only one line hooked up. When the phone rings, the red Line 1 light flashes. However, the “New Call” light for Line 2 flashes and the Caller ID information is displayed as coming in on BOTH lines. AT&T’s customer support line is automated only. I tried to contact AT&T by e-mail. However, four days later and still no response.
I cannot give the phone 5 stars because of this problem and AT&T’s failure to timely respond to my e-mail.

Pretty Darn Good
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Not bad for the money.
It works with just the battery.
The speakerphone voice quality is A+. I give it that because I tested it by calling my cell phone and leaving my usual sales call message from the speakerphone. I then called myself back from my speakerphone to listen to the message left and it was clear as a bell. If you are in sales or work on your phone that is very important, you can do your business hands free. I don’t think I could ask for better clarity for the money.
I don’t like the double click feature to make calls from the directory. And adding names is not intuitive.

AT&T 993 Corded 2-Line Speakerphone
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The only thing I like about this phone is that it’s a two-line corded phone with caller ID. It’s very hard to program, it’s hard to read, it has lights that are on continually and light up the whole room. I’m sorry they don’t make simple phones anymore, because that’s what I’d like best. I need a two-line phone and like Caller ID but everything gets more and more complicated from there. They’re always really hard to read because of the digital read out and dark on dark. It’s not just ATT. I needed a new phone and there’s no way to know before you buy if you’re going to like it or not. Sorry, I’m not real happy with this phone.

Good potential, but TWO strike and your OUT!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Ordered two phones formy business a little over a year ago. Two weeks after warranty expired the speaker stopped working altogether (couldn’y hear it ring). I ordered a new ATT 993 and put the defective phone in the warehouse for outbound call only. New phone now decides when the speaker is going to work. Sometimes it rings, other times not. Most annoying is getting a dial tone and making a call and the ringing thru to the dialed party and any part of thier convarsation goes silent. NOT RECOMMENDED!

Everything works as expected; very nice office phone
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had my AT&T 993 2 line phone for a few months now and am very happy with my selection. I read lots of the Amazon reviews on this and other phones, and think this was the best choice for my needs. I did have an intermittent buzz the first few days and found out it was interference from my blackberry being too close to the phone. Audio is crisp and clear, large, well angled LED is nice, and the large buttons are great. I think this is a great phone for the price. Build quality seems very good.

Good Phone, poor customer service from AT&T
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I love this phone. It has all the features I wanted and works great with my headset. One problem though – The “9″ button sticks 90% of the time. When pressed, it emits this very long tone. It isn’t a matter of cleaning the phone – this happens on programmed numbers too. I use this phone for business so went to AT&T to get help or exchange it. They have no real humans via phone support and have sent me the same form letter email saying that I could “take advantage of” their exchange program by packaging up my phone mailing it back to them (paying my own postage), then wait 2-3 weeks for a new phone to arrive. Really? I paid full price for a brand new working phone and they want me to invest even more? Seriously, that has to be the worst form of customer support I’ve seen in a while. I conduct business from this phone – how am I supposed to go without a phone for 3 weeks? I gave them a chance to resolve before I posted my feedback here…they sent the same form letter again. Nice. I guess this is the drawback of ordering online – even amazon doesn’t have an exchange program. I’ll live with the defect because I just don’t have the time to invest in sending this one back. If you order this phone or any from AT&T, keep your fingers crossed…

Speakerphone is Great
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I wanted a reasonably priced good quality speakerphone for my home office. I spend days worth of conference calls each month and this phone is PERFECT! Have been using for 5 months now & it’s great, love it.

Nearly perfect 2 line phone
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The 993 is nearly perfect if you want a straight forward 2 line phone that is easy to program, use, dial, and that is reasonably priced.
Pro’s: Very nice design, tilted display, easy to read, easy to set up and program, keys are well laid out and distinctive and large, excellent use of color, zero confusion, total set up time under 5 minutes, automatic call timer, distinctive rings, you can set which line is primary, you can turn on or off call waiting light, call light, etc. Has data port and port for headset.
Con’s: no associated portable phones (no intercom), while you can vary the volume of each phone line, the rings are distinct but not settable. Display is tilted, not tilt-able. Takes 9V battery (not included) rather than 2 AA. As I say, the cons are not much.
Overall, I’d rate this 4.9. The key is how long it lasts with heavy use… time will tell, but since it is AT&T I’m optimistic.

Nice phone for the $$
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Am very pleased with this purchase – the phone works as advertized and it didn’t take long to read about all of the features. Speakerphone has a decent enough quality and it handles two lines. Well worth the cost.

The Speaker Doesn’t Work
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The speakerphone portion of my AT&T model 993 simply stopped working a few months after I bought it. All I get is a low buzz when I turn it on. The quality of my unit isn’t high, but maybe others have had better luck. The phone is nothing like what the “old” AT&T used to sell…

Great phone
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This phone has been a great addition to my office. It has lots of programmable options and the one touch speed dial is a real time saver. Great sound quality, both receiving and transmitting. Speakerphone works really well too! I would highly recommend this product for those looking for a 2 line corded office phone.

Quality Phone at a Reasonable Price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Bought this to replace a RCA ViSYS two line phone I’d suffered with for a year. That phone had mediocre sound on the hand set and the speaker phone function was poor to start with and had gotten unusable.
This phone sounds great. Clear and loud on the handset, great speakerphone, and headset. It has a very solid feal and a good set of functions.
I was a little surprised to find there wasn’t a dedicated voice mail key, so, I had to dedicate one of my 18 speed dial locations to that, but, other than that I’m very happy with this phone.

Almost perfect
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Great 2 line phone for use in my home office. A couple of minor annoyances, though.
First the good:
+ Separate volume controls for each ringer
+ Able to control which line is auto-selected
+ Speakerphone very clear
+ Headset jack
+ plenty of speed-dial buttons
+ excellent sound quality.
Now the minor annoyances:
- Caller ID display does not hyphenate numbers, you will see 202-5551212
- If a number is in the directory, caller ID does NOT display the directory entry (why??!!)
- The menu navigation is odd, and I often hit the wrong button when trying to use the menus.
- Cannot disable beeping tone made when you press buttons (annoying at first, but later you won’t even notice them.)
All that said, I am very happy with this phone.

Perfect 2 line phone!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My 2 line phones were dying and I needed to update them fast, but didn’t want to spend a ton of money. I looked at the reviews on Amazon for this At&t 993 and decided to take a chance. Well, it arrived today and I fell in love with it immediately. I didn’t bother to put in a 9v battery yet and even so, all the functions work on a/c power alone! I think it would lose the caller I.D. information if it were unplugged, so I’ll splurge on a 9 volt battery. My old Sprint phone would die if the batteries were removed. The first thing I did was to program speed dial for each of my voice mails. What a simple task! The phone voice quality is fine, and the buttons are large which will make it easy for someone with less than perfect vision to dial a number. I’m very pleased and will be buying more soon.

A phone not to buy
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
buttons must be depressed with the exact amount of pressure determined by AT&T, but not explained in the sparse instruction book. Its always fun to redial the number till you get it right. The major problem with this phone is that sometime the mouthpiece decides not to transmitt your voice. Thats a great option when you can only hear what the other person is saying and they dont have to listen to your complaints. This is a phone that has some nice features, but overall a terrible phone. Ive had this for about two weeks. Its going back tomorrow after I try to call for permission to return it.

Not for Business
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I’ve lived with this phone for less than a year and it’s been a nightmare. There’s always feedback and a weird humming sound. At first I thought it was my Voip service so I switched providers, but it turns out its the phone. Now the speaker has completely stopped working – forcing me to buy a new more expensive replacement. I run a business from home and the phone is our lifeline. Truly disappointing.
