I bought this printer to be my “main” printer as I was doing a lot of printing and going through ink like crazy on my ink jet printer. This printer is probably one of the best purchases I have made. I am still on my original toner (came with the printer) and haven’t had any problems with the printer. I would highly recommend this printer to anyone looking to purchase a laser printer for their home.

I’m very satisfied with the quality of the printing. It’s easy to setup but need to follow the instructions closely. I’ve got a paper jam though the first time I started printing. It is alright after that. It could not print on both sides though. Need to do it manually.

The Brother HL-2140 was not my first choice in a personal laser printer, but I have been extremely happy with my purchase. The setup of the printer was easy through my Vista based computer using the enclosed setup guide. I even set it up as a shared network printer and loaded the software on my older desktop computer as well as my laptop. It has worked flawlessly in the one month I have had it installed.

I was looking for a printer with a small height so that it would fit nicely on an open shelf in my computer desk. It’s small size (less than 7″ tall) is just perfect for tight situations. The quality of the output and the speed is great, especially considering that I paid less than $60 for it from Amazon. I would probably not choose this printer for a busy office, but it is perfect for home, small office and student use. Do not sell this printer short. It packs a lot of punch into a small footprint at a great price.

    Oh Brother! Laser Printer

For years I have used the inkjet printers. I was fooled by their low cost, and trapped by their high cost of replacement cartridges. I don’t print at home as often as I used to, and inkjet cartridges dry up when not in use (in the printer). So, instead of buying the next inkjet cartridge at $30/$50 each, I decided to look into an inexpensive, reliable, dependable, cost-effective black-and-white laser printer. And with the Brother HL2140 I found it! I’ve used laser printers in the past at work. I’m amazed at how far along the printers have improved.

    1) very easy to install (follow the quick setup exactly and it works perfectly)

    2) cartridge is easy to install and very affordable

    3) quiet and prints FAST (my inkjet is a turtle in comparison)

    4) print quality is good

    5) very well made

I read the Amazon reviews before I purchased it, and that helped make my decision. To the reviewer that included the tip of putting a piece of tape on the cartridge — thanks.

I would write a whole bunch more, but bottomline, if you’re looking for an inexpensive laser printer, buy the Brother.

Hard not to love this printer
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
    PROS:

    * The toner cartridges (especially high-yield) last a long time, and my drum still has a lot of life left in it. Also, replacements for both seem to be reasonably priced. (Non-OEM toners and drums are also available for less, though I have not tried any.)

    * I leave my printer off most of the time to save energy, but when I turn it on, it starts quickly, and my first page is out of the printer in no time at all.

    * Plays nicely with OS X (and Windows)

    * Small size (for a laser)

    * Cheaper than an inkjet over the long run–and perhaps even initially, as (despite the list price of this item) it’s quite easy to find it on sale for significantly less. I paid only a double-digit price for this printer.

    CONS

    * Input tray is only 250 pages–not a big deal, since you shouldn’t use this printer for huge jobs, but it means that if you buy a ream of paper, you’ll have to save half of it somewhere else.

    * It seems to use a lot of energy, as my lights flicker when printing

    * No automatic duplexing. This isn’t a surprise (it says “manual duplexing” in the specs), but it’s painful to have to print evens, turn the pages around yourself (and remember the correct way to do it–even trickier when you’re doing four pages per sheet), and then print odds.

    * The cartridges claim they’re empty before they are. Google the “tape trick” for this printer, and you’ll see how to use the full life of your cartridge. (Basically, cover the window on the right side of the cartridge with opaque tape, and continue using it until it’s genuinely out of toner.)

    OTHER

This is a great printer for home or personal use. It’s faster and cheaper than an inkjet, which is mostly what I’m concerned about, plus the prints look great. No complaints, and I recommend this printer to anyone looking for an inexpensive (but still good) black and white printer for low-to-medium volume printing.

    Great for students!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Entering my senior year of college with two senior projects, there was obviously going to be a lot of printing to do. My inkjet printer worked okay, but it tended to run out of black ink really quickly. Plus, the printer didn’t support the high-capacity cartridge that my parents’ higher-end printer used, so I was buying 2-3 black cartridges a year. They went on my Christmas list, for heaven’s sake!

Enter Brother HL-2140. I found it for a decent price (not here at the time, the going price seems to shift like sand w/rebates and all). I calculated my inkjet was costing me 10c/pp while this unit (with high capacity toner) would cost a mere 1.2c/pp. It spins up in about 10 seconds, page curl is noticeable but tolerable. Print resolution is very good (and no ink smears). I have not experienced the problem of feeding pages that just printed back through for duplexing and having them jam as some people have. I just feed back through and it works fine.

The footprint is small for a laser–one of the smallest I’ve seen (but not the absolute smallest). It did emit a “pine tree” smell for the first few prints, but that’s gone away.

This printer plugs in and works without an install CD with Windows 7 x86 and x64. However, Windows 7 will not install the most functional driver. It will work just fine, but there will be no options for tonersave, duplexing and the like. Get the driver from Brother. Oh, and the driver (both) are Device Stage capable. Works fine as a shared USB printer over a network (even with hacked DD-WRT routers acting as wireless bridges). Note that the printer itself does NOT have network capabilities–it has to be plugged into a PC.

Nagging Complaints: Does not come with a USB cable (I knew this in advance but it reminds me of toys or accessories that need batteries, but come without them). There is no way (that I know of) to view the exact toner level without using “Print Settings” in the control panel (and thus using more toner).

I kinda disagree with the reviews~~~~

I would not recommend this printer for an office. It is overall slower than any epson inkjet , noisier than any laser printer out of my 3, and it curls the paper a bit. But it does do the work.

Oh yea and it looks like a dinosaur.

  8. J. Delaney Says:

The worst printer I’ve ever had.
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I’ve had nothing but trouble with this printer since I bought it 6 months ago at Office Max. It allows me print off the web ONLY if I’m using Explorer, rather than my normal browser (Mozilla). It won’t print jpegs, and even in regular Word documents it gets confused if the doc is over 30 pages. I’ve wasted a ton of paper trying to get documents printed completely and correctly.

I took it back to Office Max and they replaced it with the same model for free, but the same problems remained, even though I reloaded the software. When I called customer support, their only advice was–”When you want to print a jpeg, save it in a Word document” or, “Don’t use Mozilla.” There’s no advice about how to prevent it from skipping pages.

Even though it’s still under warranty, there’s no way to remedy the situation. If I send it back, I’ll be without a printer for a month or so–all I can do is to keep using it until I just can’t stand it any more.

  9. D. Li Says:

Excellent printer no matter what you pay for it.
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I know some of you might be envious if you have to pay for the price listed on Amazon, but I got it online on a great deal for $39.99 + shipping (total of $52). It was also available at stores for $49.99 at the same time on a special offer, but they were all gone.

As a college student, I really needed a printer to do all the print jobs that were required. I amazingly went through the 300 free prints per semester in about 3 weeks, and I wasn’t planning on paying 13 cents a page at the school library, which was really a hassle as well.

So far I’ve had it for about a month and it has worked perfectly. The only complaint I had was that the first 30 pages had black ink splotches on the right side, but it has gone away for every print since then. The printer feeds the paper well, even when I double side print the second time around.

There were a few jams that required a quick removal and once when a page was incompletely printed, but these are very minor problems that I have had with every printer I’ve encountered.

Overall, a workhorse and completely worth its money. So far so good, will update on my review if there is any major problem on it soon.

It was an easy set up. We have a MacBook with an airport, and it set up just fine. Prints out fast. We’ve had it for about a month and the toner that came with it is still going strong. I’m nervous about how fast it will go through toner, since new cartridges are expensive. Be sure to set it to “toner saver” mode. I was able to print on cardstock with no problem.

Pretty easy to set up, good print quality. My first Brother product. So far, so good. If I had it to do again, I might have spent a little more money to get the same model with wireless printing option. But maybe not, this was a real deal, a new machine for $30 less than the cost of repairing my 6 year old HP 1012 laser. (All because a piece of plastic half the size of my little finger came off in the USB connector hole. But don’t get me started on that…)

    Lasers are fun!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have received the printer. It is loads of fun. I am still using the cartridge that came with the printer, and I’m pretty sure that I have gotten 200 pages out of it by now. That being said, I do not foresee replacing the cartridge anytime soon. The quality is awesome, and even though it is only black and white, a minor tweak in the setting and the gray scale pictures are coming out quite well. Very fast, and somewhat loud when it prints, but it is an awesome jet engine type of sound so cannot really complain about it, just figured it is worth mentioning to the fellow buyers. There are not too many features that I noticed, but the single button operation is awesome. If you print a lot of stuff, than don’t waste your time using the conventional ink jets that take forever. For the buck it is awesome and fits well on my desk.

    Awesome Printer
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this printer about a month ago from here at Amazon. Previously I had had an all-in-one Lexmark printer, but I almost never used all of its features except for basic printing and the printer was always running out of ink. Since the ink was so expensive I decided to just get a whole new printer, and I decided on this one. I couldn’t be more happy that I got this printer. First of all the cost is amazing. The total cost of this printer here on Amazon was the price of my ink cartridges for my old printer. Also, the print speed and quality of this printer is great. If you’re unsure what laser printer to get, I would definitely recommend this one.

    1 Year Owner of Hl-2140
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I’ve had this printer for about 1 year now. I gets 3 stars because it is a reliable and easy-to-use little printer, but there are some irritating things about it. First let me say that this is the only laser printer I have ever owned, so I won’t be comparing it with any other models.

    PROS:

1)It is reliable and gets the job done. It hardly ever jams or acts up.

    2) The toner is reasonable if you shop around for the best price (Amazon is always competitive, but not necessarily the cheapest if someone else is running a sale). Keep in mind there are two toner cartridge types the tn330 and tn360 – I’ve only used the extended one (tn360).

3)The starter toner you get actually goes pretty far – I printed close to 1000 copies, maybe more. It is very easy to get set up and operate.

    CONS:

1)I have not done a good job at keeping track of how many copies I get out of one of the tn360’s, but it often seems to not quite last as long as it should. More importantly, the toner cartridges stop working BEFORE they actually run out of toner. There are sensors on the cartridges that tell the printer the toner is low. You get the warning messages, but the pages you are printing still look fine. Then one day, it says the toner is out. But the last page you printed was perfect. Why? There are sensors on the cartridges that the printer reads. However, there is a work-around of this. Go to You Tube and do a search.

    2) Drum replacement. After a few extended TN360 cartridges, I started getting the drum warning light. A new drum costs about what the printer costs.

Bottom line: This printer has a huge hidden cost in the drum replacement, and the toner sensor is a little evil, but it starts off so cheap that it can be worth it. I have not tried any 3rd party toner cartridges or drum replacements, but they are significantly cheaper than Brother stuff. I am thinking of trying one of the drum replacements from a 3rd party *they go for under $60). If I do and it works, it will make the printer a pretty affordable little workhorse. If not, the best option seems to be to just buy a new one, because you get a new drum and starter printer cartridge.

Printer works fine, but a total scam with toner.
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This printer works pretty well, the only problem I’ve had has been a few paper jams. If the rating was based on the printer only, I’d give it 4 stars.

But unfortunately the printer will stop working when the toner is supposedly low. Of course, Brother had to make the printer stop working because otherwise you’d see that there was still toner. My printer stopped working after about a week with the “toner is out” message, which was ridiculous. Fortunately there is an easy way out of this scam, simply put some opaque tape on the transparent window area by the gear on the toner. My printer has printed hundreds of pages since the printer stopped working due to low toner….

problems from the day it was born
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This printer has had problems since I bought it. The pages curl. They have black dots around their edges. They don’t lay out well as they print, thus getting out of order and falling on the floor. The ink is expensive, and after only a year I can’t print because the corona wire is dirty. I’ve cleaned it and cannot get it to print. A new cartridge with wire costs more than the printer. Very poor all around.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Great printer at a great price (around $50 on sale). Using Times Roman font was weak so I mostly use Arial that prints better on this printer. Covered window on the right side of the cartridge with opaque tape and the starter cartridge printed hundreds of pages after indicating empty.

Here are my notes for printing duplex, envelopes and booklets using Word 2003:

I bought this printer a few weeks ago when I started school. I had been looking for an inexpensive laser printer because I like to print a lot of stuff for classes (powerpoints, lecture outlines, etc.) and these are very cost effective on toner.

I ordered this for around $55, got it within a few days as always with Amazon, and excitedly ripped open the box. Installation was a breeze, and the Brother drivers don’t bog down my laptop. I had it up and running in 15 minutes, installation and everything. Print quality is outstanding; it’s not very noisey and the warmup time is a few seconds. The included divers have a lot of features concerning quality and toner use that you can easily fool around with to adjust for personal use. It’s not very big, takes up a quarter of my desk at school… which is lacking in space to begin with so I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a great little printer at a really great price. You’d be a fool not to take advantage and grab one. Brother’s are impeccable and last forever.

    Overall: Awesome!

Great Printer, Especially for the price
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I picked up this printer for around 50 dollars and it is a champ . I have probably printed out 200 pages to date with no problems. The only thing i didnt like and wasnt aware of is that you need to buy a usb to fire wire cable to set up the printer, maybee im just not with the times, as i havent purchased a printer in quite a few years and the last one i did came with all cabels needed.

  22. Ellen Anne Eddy Says:

    Miserable set up
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
In fairness, I really can’t say how the features are or the print speed, quality, noise, etc. I’ve been trying to set this up since last Tuesday and it’s Sunday. The instructions are not helpful and it’s very fussy about what cables it has ( made much worse by the fact that it does not supply it’s cables). The third ( identical) cable did the job. I would not recommend this printer although it seems to print just fine once it’s up. The set up was monstrous.

    GREAT Infrequent Printer
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Why did I ever buy an ink jet printer? I print about 2 documents a month. My ink jets always got clogged because I didn’t print enough. I almost never print in color. What was I thinking? The toner cartridge for this printer will probably last me several years with NO CLOGGING. If you don’t print in color very often, and you don’t print very often, this baby is the way to go. I can’t believe a laser printer exists at this price. Awesome printer for infrequent printing.

    Good Cost-effective printer
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Basically, the printer is pretty fast at printing. Its good quality. I am on my rotations right now and I, like the fellow below, have to print a ton of articles and papers. The other day I printed 500 pages. How long did that take? 20 minutes.

The best thing, you can highlight without smearing.

Cost wise, its about 2 cents a page. $[...] dollars for a high-yield toner which printer 2600 pages. Also, you can get more out of the toners by shaking them. I usually do that to squeeze out another 200 pages ish.

Also, if you can get a hook up to get the toners cheaper through like a staples business account then its even better. I was able to acquire the brother cartridges (new) for about [...]. Making my cost/page about a penny.

All in all, toss out the inject printer. If you need color to print photos, then get a photo printer for photos. For all the other crap you print out on a day to day basis, the laser printer will do you good and save you money for taco bell.

  27. Cramer Says:

    Great, with minor flaws
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have had this printer for about a year now and it’s been great with minor flaws.

First the positives, above all price! It’s a great printer that keeps cash in your pocket. It’s easy to set-up and I have had no big problems with it

The print quality is great. I read a lot of scanned journal articles for school and if you have a bad printer, a scan of a copy that’s then printed often becomes unreadable (on ink printers especially).

On the other hand, sometimes, if I don’t use it for a few days, next time I print it claims it’s jammed. 9 times out of 10 it’s not. To fix it, just open the cartridge bay, and close it again and it’ll work just fine. Other times it will jam in the middle of printing several pages for no reason, but I guess all prints jam from time to time.

Another issue I’ve had with it is the toner. It will tell you the toner is low and refuse to print. It’s low, not out! You have to remove the toner cartridge and reinsert to get it to print again. It’s as if they designed it this way purposefully so you buy toner more often.

Aside from a couple tedious methods to get this thing to do its job, the bottom line is it’s a great printer for the price. I’m not afraid to coax it into working, and if you aren’t either you can’t go wrong with this Brother. Just don’t believe you’re out of toner until your printer icon flashes red instead of yellow ;)

  28. greenchic Says:

NO 2-Sided Printing & Paper Jams
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
For a product that advertises “Environmentally Friendly Design” as one of its features, I assumed that double-sided printing would be one of its features. Not true. Although the B&W print quality is good so far, I’m now stuck with a one-side-only printer, so I have to print odd pages only and refeed them face up and upside down into the printer tray and print even pages only in order to get a double-sided print job. Annoying.

Also, the 2.0 USB cable that you need in order to print from your computer (where else would you print from?) is not included with the product. Again, annoying. Moreover, the Belkin cable that Amazon suggests for you to purchase in the “Frequently Bought Together” section comes from a non-Amazon retailer and took forever to ship. Thus, I had to wait an extra week, after the printer arrived, to print. Uber-annoying. So, I suggest, if you must buy this printer, go to Best Buy, Walgreens, Staples, etc to buy a cable, so your printer is ready to use when it arrives. (On a somewhat related note, the printer booklet says not to use a USB cable longer than 6 feet, so why is Amazon pushing a 10-foot cable in the “Frequently Bought Together” section? Anyways, the 10-foot Belkin cable works fine…after it finally arrived!)

UPDATE: Paper is now jamming on a fairly consistent basis. Since the printer is barely a week old, I wish I could demote my rating down to 1 star.

Great black and white printer. I thought it had an automatic duplex feature when I bought it tough (e.g. Put it on duplex and just put the paper back in the printer the other way and its done). You have to do odd pages on one pass and evens on the other or vice versa depending on what the last page is.

    Otherwise, good printer.
