Great value in an all-in-one printer

This is my second Brother MFC, and both are serving well in two different locations. Although the print speed could be faster and the colors could be a slight bit truer, this is a great value- it does everything I ask of it. Simple setup. Can’t do anything about the average print speed, but colors can be adjusted. Fax works fine. I wish the paper hopper held twice as much paper (only holds about 1/2″ stack). A big insult was the amount of ink in the included cartridges… it started warning low ink in all cartridges within 4 days… and I hadn’t printed many things… between 10-20 color documents, about half of them pictures. Come on, people, don’t treat your customers like that- we’re talking a few pennies worth of ink here- charge another dollar for the printer or loss-lead it, don’t make people angry at the start. Poor marketing, regardless if it has become common among the manufacturers. The good news is that this is my only major gripe. My advice: If the features fit your needs, buy this printer.

I’m no computer genius, but I was able to hookup this printer and network it so I can use it with all of the computers in my house. I love it, It’s been easy to use in the month or so I’ve had it. Ink is very priced very reasonably. I would recommend this printer to anyone looking for a nice printer for home or home office.

THIS IS A PRETTY GOOD DEAL FOR A ALL IN ONE PRINTER. I ALSO LIKE IT THAT IT IS WIRELESS. SO YOU DONT HAVE TO BE CONNECTED TO PRINT. YOU CAN PRINT ANYWHERE IN THE HOUSE. SO FAR SO GOOD. I WOULD RECOMMEND IT!!!!

I’m 59 yo female and not too tech savy, but with time, It’s up and working perfectly. I espcially like the flat screen scanner and being able to scan into my computer to fill out forms. Faxes just dandy. no problems to report as yet. I have recommended to friends and family. Good overall machine suited perfectly to my needs.

We have always owned HP printers. Due to bad reviews on the current HPs, we checked out some other brands. We ordered this Brother based on our needs and the reviews.

    What a great printer!

I was able to connect the printer to my router by following the directions, then had a little trouble with connecting it to my PCs. I called Brother’s toll-free support line, and the person (American speaker) gave me clear, easy, informed directions on how to connect both of our PCs (she took me through the steps twice, once for each computer). Within 10 minutes, our laptops were sending documents wirelessly to the printer.

I also like the ink cartridge set-up: four separate cartridges. So if I use lots of red, I can just replace that cartridge instead of replacing a “color cartridge” that may still contain a lot of blue and yellow.

I would definitely recommend this printer.

I never had brother product before. First one, and I m very impressed and satisfied. Wireless is so awesome. Printing is good and connectivity and other options are more than sufficient for a home user.

You cant beat this product at this price!

    Great Printer for Home Use
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this wireless all-in-one printer for $79.99 several weeks ago. I am impressed with the compact, stylish design. Wireless setup was easy, although the startup information in the manual and startup guide was unnecessarily complicated. After connecting an ethernet cable to my router, all that was required was to step through the menu on the printer screen.

The Print, Scan, Copy and Fax functions all work well. The controls are logical and well laid out. I particularly like the two Start buttons, one for color output, the other for B/W. It’s much easier than selecting from a menu. The wireless printing works well. The print speed is not fast, but for my uses it is adequate. Quality of color printing and 4 X 6 photos are at least on par with the Canon i860 this printer replaces.

The printer uses four ink tanks. Ink level is indicated on the printer screen and on the computer. So far, if the ink level monitors are correct, the printer uses ink very efficiently. I purchased replacement ink cartridges from [...] but have yet to need to install them.

Overall, this has proven to be a very nice printer for my needs. Considering the price, it’s an outstanding buy.

For the price, this printer is awesome. I use it for household (personal) use. It was easy to set up and easy to use. I was a little worried about going wireless, but this was simple. One brief interuption in service, but the brother website had an immediate fix. It was an easy step by step fix. No issues since. For the amount of money spent-I love it.

Purchased the Brother MFC-490CW printer on Amazon while it was on sale for $79.99 including free shipping! For that price, you would be a fool not to purchase an all-in-one including built-in Ethernet, USB, and wireless. I had an HP all in one that was getting old and also used way to much ink which was about $34 a cartridge. I have found ink online for this printer ranging from $2-$15 a cartridge. This is a good solid printer for those who want to save money on ink and print a lot of documents and pictures. I have looked at HP printers triple in cost and can’t understand why anyone would overlook this printer. I installed the printer on my wireless network with 4 computers including an Apple, IBM, and two other generic custom built computers. They all work great with this printer and are able to print and scan from anywhere in the house. I love it, thanks BROTHER for making such a great printer available at a great price. Also thanks Amazon for the great deal!

Overall: Fast, Quiet, Reliable, Saves Power, Wireless, Ethernet, USB, Good Print Quality,Cheap Ink, Small size, and looks good!

We have been thinking about getting a wireless printer for some time now. Always been a fan of Epson. When I current printer quite working this week, I decided to go wireless and found this printer with great reviews. Wish we would have purchased it a long time ago. The set up was very easy and it prints from my PC laptop and the Mac. Small & compact with many features that we have never had before. Never been so excited about a printer until now. Price was great and had free shipping! LOVE IT!!!!

In buying a printer I need to be able to get cheap ink and print over the network (preferrably wireless). I got so much more with this printer. I found mine for eighty dollars at a big box store with a yellow and black sign.

The wireless setup was simple (you MAC people must like misery) and took only seconds using their wizard once I enabled the MAC address in my Belkin access point. It took a minute to find the printer’s MAC address, I printed the network configuration and it was listed as something other than MAC, but it is easliy recognizable. I’ve installed many HP printers, Parallel, USB, SCSI, Wired/Wireless Ethernet. This install flat out eliminated the HP hassle factor. The most time consuming part of the install was loading the software onto each PC in the house.

Network scanning: When you press the Scan button on the printer, you get 4 choices, scan to file, image, OCR and another. I use Scan to file. For me, the only improvement they could make would be making scan to file default to PDF, where it is JPG or BMP as default. Changing the default is easy, but it must be done on each PC, in the control center > configuration > second tab. I set it up under the first tab, and the scans continued to come over as JPEGs, not quite sure what was changing under that first tab and the instuctions are nill.

Load the pages in the Auto Document Feeder (ADF), face down, top first, hit the scan button > select FILE, OCR, IMAGE or X > select the PC you want to send to > GO > Start ((black or color)(Brother could improve the process by adding a programmable macro button). Within seconds it’s on your desktop. If you don’t want to deal with renaming and sorting right away, it’s right there in the control center folder for later processing. This may all be old news to many, for me the only systems that have this capability are very expensive, require licensing on each workstation and much configuration. No more saving paper bills, tax records, medical records, etc.. So much easier than always wanting to have done it with a scanner but never did because it was such a hassle to get the paper on the glass, scan, open, crop and print to PDF.

Can’t tell much about photo scanning, I did scan one at low resolution (default)and it seemed okay, not as good as my Epson flatbed, I’ll have to tweak the settings and see what happens. If I ever get to scanning in our 1000’s of family pics I would either use this or get a dedicated photo scanner with a feeder, very cheap these days.

Printing from the PC is flawless. The printer shuts down after 10 min by default. In many tests the thing has awakened, did its’ duty and gone back to sleep. Word documents are perfect. I printed an Aniversary card on plain paper using Brother’s free online creative center. The quality was just fine for the Clark Howard kind of guy I am.

We don’t fax but for a couple of times a year, but being able to do it from the PC without a printed copy is a good thing.

I can’t speak for ink usage, but I purchased 30 cartridges for 40 on auction “buy it now” If the after market ink ends up killing it, SO WHAT. 30 OEM cartridges would buy how many new printers? My Epson Photo R200 ran for many years on aftermarket ink till it recently died. I loved the Epson too but HATED their cartridges with the built in chips; it was always a hassle getting the thing to work with anything but Epson ink. Unlike the Epson and others, the Brother cartridges install from the front of the printer, you don’t have to repeatedly push the ink button and wait on the carriage to go back and forth to put in a new cartridge. The great thing in common whith both printers is having separate color cartridges. In years of printing, never did all colors run out at the same time. It may be easier to have one color cartridge, but you’re tossing your cash in the trash.

As for whinning about washed out colors, etc.., what are people using this printer for anyway? The colors on standard paper are good, great for the kid’s homework assignments. As for printing photos, upload them and print them at the drugstore, save yourself lot of money on ink and photo paper. You can’t break even printing photos at home unless you print many more than the normal person on a regular basis. I printed a photo from my SD card (which by the way is very cool, the printer’s LCD displays the images from the card) onto years old cheap photo paper, it was very good as a proof, good enough for Grandma.

My 3 kids are using this thing without me having to get involved at all. I love it, if it dies, I’ll buy another Brother(that is unless they get the courts to shut down the aftermarket manufacturers like Espon did). I just hope it gives me 3 good years.

Bought this printer and received it a few days ago, This printer is great, and it is fully compatible with linux.

it prints pictures fairly fast and the print quality is above what you get from print kiosks at stores.

It has a nice screen to pick the pictures that you want to print and it has enhancement options.

Very easy setup to run wireless all you need is your network key and install the drivers and you’re ready to go, comes with drivers for windows and Mac and you can download drivers for Linux on brother’s website as well, the only thing I still cant get to work is scaning without having it plugged into a usb port on Linux which is not that big of a problem for me.

I believe this is the best printer someone can get for this price. and the ink for it is very inexpensive if compared to other printer brands.

    Great product for the price

I think this is a great product for the price, when up against the competitors. The wireless setup isn’t as easy as I anticipated, and I need help getting it online, but once it was up and running everything was perfect. It’s not a fast printer, but it’s pretty quiet. As for ink consumption, too soon to tell, and you need to adjust your printer settings every time so it won’t use your color ink to match black print. Every other function is just perfect… works well, great value for the money.

After a month’s use, I have found this to be a great little machine for my home use. It does everything very well, including scanning old photographs and creating digital images which are as good as those taken with a digital camera. I haven’t put the machine through any “rough” use yet and haven’t printed enough materials to know just how the ink consumption will do. Overall, I really like the machine and would recommend it for home use.

I have been very pleased with the Brother printers and the ease of setting them up on a wired or wireless network. The LC61 is the second printer I have purchased in the last 5 years. For the price and ease of usage, best way to go. Have been greatly impressed with this product.

    Great Purchase
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this item from another site at a much cheaper price ($80), but it was an great investment. What attracted me to it was the wireless feature, plus the other great features. I needed a new fax machine and this is a doozy. I have it in a central location in my home so it can be utilized by all the other computers in the house. Printing is a breeze for my entire family and all you have to do is use the setup disk and your computer is ready.

Less than a year and I’m returning mine for a replacement. Customer service is poor, especially through the website. I demanded e-mail support and they kept saying they could only help me if I called. I had to wait forever online and deal with one of those lousy computer guided questionnaires. After doing some research, turns out their printers usually have this issue (black ink stops printing) and customers either ditch the printer or buy a new one. I’m giving them a second chance since they’re mailing me a new one, but their shipping company requires a signature and they only deliver M-F during the days. Sucks for someone like me who works M-Sat and is never home during the day.

    Stay away from this printer
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased this printer a few months ago to use for school. Since then, it has given me nothing but trouble. Brother has decided to have this printer do random “cleanings” which are loud, annoying, and use up the ink at a ridiculous rate. Also, like other Brother printers, it uses light to check the ink levels, which means it will refuse to print even if there is in left in the cartridge. After finding out how to trick the printer into thinking the cartridge was full, I was able to print more pages after the fix than before it said it was empty. Adding to that, the software is not that great and it will not save the changes you make, meaning you have to tell it every time to print in reverse etc. I will NEVER buy another Brother printer. Stay away from this horrible machine!

  19. John Carchio Jr. Says:

Like mine so much I bought another as a gift.
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
When my HP all-in-one-died, I replaced it with one of these. It has more features than my old HP, cost half as much – as do the ink cartridges – and works so well I bought a second one and gave it to my sister. It’s a terrific all-in-one, but I think they’ve already replacd this model with a newer one. No matter, when the time comes, my next printer will be a Brother.

  20. V. McMullen Says:

    not so multi-functional
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I have owned this printer/copier/scanner for a few years, and have been very disappointed. My number one criticism is that it won’t print on any paper heavier and/or shinier than regular copy paper. Part of the reason I bought a color printer with photo printing capabilities is because I want the option of printing cards and postcards. This is not possible using this printer. Also, every time it jams (which is often) I have to remove a panel in the back which is very hard to remove. The photos do NOT come out with the quality I would expect from a “photo printer,” the scan feature is not very intuitive and often makes blurry scans, and the ink cartridges are expensive. I do prefer the single color cartridges, and that is the main thing this machine has going for it. I cannot speak to the fax capability because I don’t use it for that, but I have tried every other feature and have been unimpressed.

If this “multi-function” machine actually did the things it is supposed to, it would probably be great. I’m not even sure I would recommend this if all you ever want to do is make copies. There are better, cheaper machines out there for that.

The printer was delivered on time. It is easy to set up. The installation documentation provides all the details. I have one desktop computer connecting to the cable router and two other wireless notebooks. All of them can print to this wireless printer. It is hard to beat the price at this quality and performance.

Great wireless printing & scanning with a Mac OS X!
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Setup, wireless printing & scanning with my mac is easy and smooth. Ink use is great and the cartridges are not that expensive. Sleeps when not in use. I never have that need to turn it off. Printing speed is not so impressive. I’ve seen photo printers make faster prints than this one. Photo printing is embarrassing. Text and graphics are OK. One thing about this is that it JAMS. It jams close to 60% of the time. Take note that I print on different mediums, from inkjet paper stickers and shipping labels.

    My review
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a pretty awesome printer I received it really fast. It was a great bargain buy for the price I paid $79.99. It works really good. I am not really familiar on how to set up faxes so that part was kind of complicated for me so, I probably want get the full usage out of the fax. All the other basic functions were pretty much procedural. For the picture quality it was great, better than what I had expected and it printed pretty fast. But I have to admit setting up the printer to print pictures was kind of involving at first but, after trail and error and rereading the directions I got the hang of it. Overall I really like the printer and I loved the price.

  27. Michael P. Palya Sr. Says:

    Great features for the money.
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have several inkjet and laser printers. This one , by far is the cheapest for the buck (at the time I purchased it) and it has great features that are available in the much more expensive models. I do not have much experience with Brother printers so I am hoping the quality holds up. If it does, this is close to a five star printer.

The printer was fairly easy to set up using the automated CD install but some may find it a little challenging, due to the complexity of all the features. The more features, the more to set up and configure and tweak.

The software (full feature) tends to be a large package and may add a little time to Windows startup on your PC since it does things like loading a printer monitor which watches ink levels and connectivity. Setting up this printer VIA cable is much easier than choosing the wireless setup which requires some technical knowlege about wireless networking.

The print speed seems to be fairly quick in normal mode. I wouldn’t exactly call this a “photo” printer but it has a neat tray that allows you to store both photo size paper and normal paper at same time. A slide of the tray converts from photos to paper printing.

The printer itself seems to be of good quality but the tray seems a bit on the flimsy side but I have seen $800 printers with flimsy trays as well. Ink usage seems to be good and I was able to buy “refurbished” refills on Amazon for an excellent price, so if they work, it will be 5 stars as far as operating costs. Some printers issue warnings or refuse to print or read ink levels when using refurbished cartridges so I have yet to test them. Normal print quality was fast and very good but photo printing with the included ink cartridges was slower and fair at best. All considered, lots of function and features for a low price. Typical free shipping from Amazon was fast as usual.

  28. Bryan Mccormick Says:

    Horrible printer with horrible support
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
For this price point, i thought this printer was too good to be true. It was. I think it has worked thrice during the course of the year i have had it. First, the installation software is junk. I couldn’t even get it to work on Vista (which was supported – supposedly). Then I tried windows 7 (not supported) and it worked – for a while. Then the printer mysteriously goes offline and I cannot print or scan to PDF (which I need to be able to do). Don’t try to go to the website to get the most up-to-date installation media; they are not on the website; only bits and pieces that will NOT give you the full installation. Furthermore it starts up numerous unnecessary programs during startup for no reason. It is time cosuming to remove/reinstall (which is all tech support knows to tell you to do). After I finish this review, I am going on Amazon and looking for another printer because bottom line: THIS PRINTER IS NOT WORTH THE LESS.

  29. MaxD72 Says:

All this for $80? Can’t go wrong.
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
There may be faster machines out there. Some may offer better quality prints. But if you are looking for a wireless printer that can also scan, fax (a feature I haven’t used yet) and copy, then you can’t go wrong with the Brother unit. The print quality is good and it is fast enough for my needs. After a month of use, I’m fully satisfied.

  30. John Davidson Says:

    Very Simple and useful printer
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve tried Canon, Epson, and HP printers, but in my experience the Wireless Brother Printers are the best and easiest to use. We recently gave my mother her first macbook and programmed it to use voice commands to scan in photos. It’s very simple for her to use, and the printer is on her wireless G network, which means she can put it anywhere in her house.

For Snow Leopard users, please keep in mind that to scan you have to use preview or Image Capture to scan pictures. It won’t work simply pushing the button on the printer. That may change in a driver update at some point. The bright side is, if you put 5 pictures on the scanner, Snow Leopard will automatically separate the 5 pictures into different files.

This is the 3rd scanner/printer combo I’ve bought from brother. It’s simple and the ink loads easily in the front, no taking apart of the printer will be in your future.
