Must download latest driver on Mac OSX 10.3
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this printer for occasional use away from my primary residence. Inexpensive b&w laser printers are ideal for this type of service since there is no ink to dry out and no nozzles to clog. However, a word of warning, I strongly recommend downloading the latest drivers, currently 9-09, from HP if you are using a Mac!

    Just fine so far
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Pros: Prints fast and prints clearly; price on sale entirely reasonable; easy setup; takes up very little space.

Cons: Takes quite awhile to power up, compared to the many other HP laserjet models I’ve used; pulls a lot of juice for its size (again, compared to the many other HP laserjet models I’ve used).

Overall, it’s going to meet my needs well for a reasonable price if it continues to function as it has so far (I bought it earlier this week). The Laserjet 1100 it’s replacing for home use lasted me 10 years, and it was still limping along when it got retired. If this one is even half as fine a workhorse, I’ll be delighted!

    Set and forget
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Simply and outstanding B&W laser printer for bringing information off the computer. Easy to set up and is literally set and forget. It is very fast, I have not timed it, but certainly the copy is there when you turn around. Reasonably quiet, not objectionable, just a slight whirring noise. Small footprint and enough weight to keep it anchored. Good paper capacity.

We have two of them, one much older. Recommend keeping an HP toner cartridge on hand because when it is done, that’s it – no warning. Runs for a LONG time on the HP regular cartridge. (don’t remember how long with the intro cartridge that comes with it, but seemed a good while) Cartridge is not cheap, but definitely worth it for the quality and convenience.

Can’t imagine what more one could want for B&W. Highly recommended.

I like the printer – I do not like the fact that you have to purchase the USB cable separately, it should be included with the printer. I do not like the fact that there is no manual or instructions in the box with the printer. You can print out the user guide from the cd but the manual is in an Adobe document that it is not compatible with my pc so I can’t print out the manual………

    It doesn’t come with a cartridge ($60) !!!
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Two weeks ago, I was shopping for a laser printer that will fit into my son’s college dorm and selected this model. After reading specifications on HP’s site, I was sure that it should come with a cartridge until my son called after receiving it.

Amazon told me that the model it sells doesn’t come with a cartridge at all (very odd!!!). So had I purchased from HP directly, it would cost me $99 + shipping, which is way lower than the cost of buying from Amazon: $99 (the printer) + $60 (the cartridge) = $159.

Although Amazon’s customer service is kind enough to give me $30 credit for purchasing a compatible cartridge, I will definitely check out the content in the box in the future, so should you all.

you should seriously reconsider this purchase
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The summary – if you are thinking of buying this printer, and you print 130 pages a month or more, than you should seriously reconsider your purchase.

I just bought the refill for my little laser printer a few weeks ago, and although there are some plusses for this printer/toner combo, in light of a new product release the P1006/35A is overall a pretty bad deal nowadays. Allow me to explain…

The 35A toner cartridge [...] yields 1500 pages [...]. I knew this was a little high when I initially brought printer about a year or so ago, still, at that time it was not that much more than anything that would yield comparable results anywhere near that price point. And at that point, and up to just a few days ago, I would have rated this four stars, knocking one star knocked off for value. I will outline all the plusses of this printer at the bottom, but do want to mention that functionally there is nothing wrong with the P1006/35A combo, in fact it gets many things right. What changes my evaluation of this printer is the introduction of the HP 8500. The HP 8500 comes in a few different flavors, but the base one currently runs [...] on Amazon. And the single most important thing about this new printer is the cost per page of black prints -[...]. Now, a great cost per page alone means little, however, [...], it prints very well too. It is listed as one of their top five printers at the moment. Had I known this at the time I ordered the toner, I would have forgone this purchase and gone with the new HP 8500 instead, most likely for the aforementioned base model, or I might even have possibly have sprung for the wireless version for the convenience of it. Regardless, I would not have gotten this refill with such a drastic cost per page difference.

    [...].

The good things about this printer: the purchase price is inexpensive; you can get one with the starter toner package for $100. It has a very small footprint. It’s been completely trouble free for me. It prints quickly. And text looks great from it. However, I would expect the same level of quality, plus affordable color prints from the 8500 (The cost of color is 1.9 cents per page). The larger footprint is not an issue for me. So, all in all, for my needs it no longer makes sense to keep buying these toner cartridges, as the cost per page is now prohibitively high given the now available 8500.

The P1006 is a great printer in many regards, but it has a huge drawback of being a bad long term value if you print even moderate amount. So that is what causes me to give this product a 2 star rating now.

A Total Piece of Unmittigated Junk
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Shocked! Blown away! Disillusioned! Stunned! I got this utter piece of plastic junk home and the paper feeder failed immediately. I opened it up to find that all the parts looked cheaper than ever Brother. It was noisy and trashy in every way. If you have a 1012, hang onto it for dear life! Everyone I know comes to me for computer advice. I’m a triple-platform guy who’s done Linux, Mac, PC, and multiple versions of each. Well, I always said, before this 1006 came out, that is was HP or nothing when it came to affordable, excellent laser printers. No more! I went to all the major big box stores, turns out they’re forcing the 1006 on us by not having any other model in that price range in stock. I had, up till this point, been a total starry-eyed believer in HP. Now I’m just flabbergasted, flummoxed, confused. Can this be real? I’m sure younger people who might buy this might not know. Perhaps they are so used to inferior products that they won’t even get it. But for those of us who bought the 1012, this is an unmitigated slap in the face. It’s surreal! Please, please write HP and tell them to recall this utter pile of flimsy junk and make us a real laser jet with really long-lasting toner cartridges and solid, sturdy parts instead of the sad, paper-thin bits of fragile trash they are currently using for components in this disgraceful machine. Please, HP, return to your former glory. Don’t go down with the rest of short-sighted corporate America! Help!

    A Great Little Printer !
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My eight year old HP laser printer wasn’t wired for my new computer so I was forced to replace it. I decided to stay with HP because the old one was virtually trouble free. On sale at Amazon, my P1006 was just under a hundred dollars. What a deal! This little printer does an amazing job and for anyone like me who doesn’t require heavy usage I highly recommend it. The only complaint, if you could even call it that, is that it’s a tad noisy. Other than that, it’s a definite winner.

I purchased this item back in February and just want to say it is a great product! I got lots of printing with the cartridge that came with the printer and quality of the printing is superior. It is a great buy for the price and I love the way it prints so quickly, right out of the box! Way to go HP!

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a great printer, however the printer will not work via the airport extreme if you have upgraded the OS to Apple OS 10.6. The printer will work on the 10.6 but you need to use an older driver. I found that I had issues using it so I have connected it to my PC. Again The MAC 10.6 update, the printer will not work.

If you are buying this printer because you want a compact lasrjet and have no need for pictures, this is it. It replaced my old Laserjet 5L and I like the faster print speed and the cancel button. At $99 how can you go wrong

    Very Fast, Great Price
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a very fast small laser printer. I have used many HP printers in the past and they were always very slow starting to print. I was surprised the first time I used this one. The price was great.

The only negative I can find is, due to the small size of the printer, the toner cartridge is quite small. For home use this should not be a problem. However, I bought it to use in a political campaign. Luckily the campaign only has slightly over a month to go so the small cartridge should not be a problem. In a longer campaign I would probably be replacing the toner too often.

Don’t buy to print shipping labels / barcodes
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased this laser printer so that I could print high quality shipping labels and barcodes for my home business. My old inkjet wasn’t producing barcodes that could be easliy scanned, so I figured a laser would solve my probem. Big mistake. The print quality looks fine hot off the printer.. the problem is the ink flakes off the paper (or label) when applying it to a box ready for shipment. I tried several types of paper / labels with the same results.

  15. Joseph R. Brusky Says:

DOES NOT WORK WITH WINDOWS 7!!!
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
There are no HP driver currently available for Windows 7 for this printer. The HP Tech Guy (Syd) told me there will NOT be one available until January 2010!!!!!

There are no generic drivers that will work either, according to Syd. I’ve tried other drivers and nothing works.

Pros: I’ve tried it on Windows XP and it works. It is quick, but you get an HP pop-up every time to confirm you actually want to print anything, especially from the manual feed loader. Prints are crisp. Fonts look good. It’s REALLY quiet! And I mean fast from an InDesign file with a lot of Postscript art overlapping one-another.

Cons: Constant Windos XP pop-ups wanting you to confirm you are printing something (just print the damn thing). It doesn’t work with Windows 7 and drivers are not to be released by HP until January 2010. No way. No how. Syd confirmed this, so there’s no doubt why this was being wholesaled (not by Amazon but by Big Box). Syd actually went on to say that no HP Laserjet will work with Win 7 right now????

Other thoughts: C’mon HP. You’ve had at least nine month to develop drivers for Windows 7. It was released to business as final code in July 2009. Final Release Candidate was in June 2009. What is the Problem? Syd said Microsoft had given vendors until January 2010 as a deadline, so that’s HP’s deadline. I don’t understand this. Fail.

If you are running XP still, this is a functional little printer for small 8-1/2 x 11 B&W laser needs (which was why I purchased it), but I’m taking it back to Big Box (okay Best Buy) for my $99 and tax refund.

    HP you disappointed me here…

There are no drivers available, it crashes
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The P1006 does not have any drivers available for Snow Leopard, you cannot use it with USB nor with Time Capsule.

I cannot imagine HP still selling this printer when one of the OS support is not available.

I have burned my fingers buying an HP laptop earlier and now with this printer not supported on Snow Leopard, I will never buy an HP product again.

  17. Jeffrey Kain Says:

Nice printer – now works with Snow Leopard
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’ve had this printer on my desk in my office for several months now, and it works very well in both Mac and Windows. It’s reasonably quiet and quite fast for being so inexpensive. The print quality is very good, and I’ve had no problems at all except for the lack of a Snow Leopard driver for the last few weeks.

HP has, however, made a new driver available for Snow Leopard and is part of the HP Printer Drivers Update 10.6.1 package that appeared in Software Update yesterday (9/22/09). This driver is a nice improvement over the earlier driver – the first page rolls out of the printer almost instantly, whereas before it would take a few seconds.

Overall, this is an excellent little printer.

    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
If you have a Mac with Snow Leopard, the printer won’t work. HP should know that before the OS X 10.6 came out. I saw when the OS still in beta status, the printer driver was already incompatible with the OS. The behavior of HP is not acceptable. In term of hardware, it is excellent.

    Great Personal Laser Printer
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is an outstanding printer. I use it at our golf club to print reports and scorecards on 27 pound cover stock. It sits right next to the computer so the printout can be examined and retrieved easily. I have also recommended this printer to two other people who bought it and are very happy with it. No more having to wait for inkjet printout or buy expensive ink cartridges. The toner in this unit lasts a long time and the cartridge is easily replaced. If you don’t need color for most of your printing, you will be better off with this laser.

  22. Mike B Says:

No more drivers in ~3 years
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
HP has a verifiable history of not supporting its products when a new OS comes out, which is every 3 years or so. I’ve had 3 HP printers that have been abandoned by HP.

Latest example: I have just purchased a Windows 7 machine and realized that there’s no complete driver for an HP Inkjet I purchased in 2007 — I cannot clean heads, read ink levels, etc. HP response? “HP has no plan to develop the full feature printer driver for this operating system”.

    Be forewarned!

  23. Pooglet Says:

Great, but not as great as previous model
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’ve been using this printer for about a month and it works very well. It’s probably the best little compact laser printer out there (my husband researched this to death). I had the previous model 1020 for about two years and never had any problems. Upsides: it looks nice and round, is compact so it fits in small spaces, never any problems printing with it. It’s also light. Quality of printing is very good. Basically great for students or as a home computer. Downsides: cartridges are expensive, but which ones aren’t. The pages can curl a bit, but not too much to be a problem. The reason I think it’s not as good as the previous model (1020?) is the following: the color (black/silver) is ugly and less cheerful than the last model (hello, engineer designers, how about some aesthetics or color???), and the whole feel of the plastic is more cheap. It just feels less sturdy and well made. And is also louder, which may be the result of this. Alas, the 1020 is no longer on market, so this is the next best option.

    Stupid HP
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This seems like a well built printer and works with XP and mac 10.5 flawlessly…

It takes a dump on me in Snow leopard 10.6 and even on a laptop with 64 bit Vista. What kind of idiots at hp wouldn’t make a driver that works with a new system? I didn’t have a choice on the os….I’ll give it another week then I’m dumping for LIFE everything HP. They did the same thing when windows XP first came out.

  25. Tony Thiel Says:

Important to play the CD first for correct installation info!
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Since I have only had the printer a few days, I can only comment on my first impressions. I have always been an HP printer supporter from day one. I have tried other printers but unfortunately I haven’t had very good luck with the others and specifically with the Epson Printers.

My trusted over the hill HP LaserJet 2100M which I’ve had since 1998 finally pooped out on me. I tried to find an equivalent printer thinking that the P1006 is inferior compared to the 2100M, and was hesitant to buy it. But now that I’m retired and on a limited budget, I really can’t afford a very expensive printer and so I purchased the P1006 anyway.

Well so far I’ve been proven wrong in my way of thinking. This printer works admirably and prints darker and faster than my old trusted HP 2100M. As far as the noise is concerned, it may be just a wee bit louder than the 2100M but I can’t be sure.

I used to be a PC and Software instructor for a major computer company and my printing requirements today are not as extensive as it used to be and all I need now is a solid printer that will print out a few pages of my DVD collection, email, receipts for items purchased through the internet and some occassional web pages.

I do have two (err!!) three printers. Two HP inkjet printers and this laser printer. The important thing to remember with the HP printers is to NOT PLUG IN THE PRINTER CABLE AND POWER UP THE PRINTER … PRIOR … to installing the printer driver. This is IMPERATIVE in most cases or you could have a ton of problems deleting the mess you’ve created and starting the installation over again.

SO BE WARNED in advance as I’ve run into a couple of problems in the past when I was in a hurry and DID NOT install the drivers first. VIEW THE CD FIRST as it gives SPECIFIC instructions as what to do .. like removing the Styrofoam inside the printer, a ring and a tape that covers the toner. If you are NOT aware of these and are in a big hurry, you could ruin the printer and make it a lot harder to get things going than it needs to be.

Other than that, enjoy what this printer has to offer. And for as cheap as it is … it’s a wonderful buy!

Oh YES, why it’s not a 5 star? Because it just my initial impression. I will be back in a month and do an addendum.

    August 22, 2009 update:

Have run into a minor problem in that sometimes the print on the printed material rubs off due to maybe a fuser problem. What do I mean by that? A laser printer works similar to a copier in that there is a drum where the images and for a lack of better word are etched into. This etched area then picks up the black toner and as it rolls on to the paper transfers the image into the paper. Then the paper goes through a heating element which fuses the toner into the paper.

In the olden days of the old Xerox copiers, there was something called fuser oil which helps fuse the image into the paper as it goes through the heating element. Don’t know if the printers of today requires this fuser oil or maybe it’s now part of the toner particles. I seem to have read somewhere where toner these days are a combination of black ink and plastic which is then fused into the paper? Maybe I read wrong, but regardless, if the imaged is not fused properly into the paper, the images will either not adhere to the paper or will sometimes rub off.

In my case it’s not all of the printed copies and sometimes only part of the printed copy. Again, in the old days of the copiers, if the fuser oil is NOT distributed evenly in all areas of the printed material, the print will have a tendency to rub off in that area … as is what sometimes happens on my printed copies.

The question now is whether the problem is with the PRINTER or with the PRINTER CARTRIDGE and or the toner material. I will certainly find out when it’s time to replace the cartridge. If it ceases, then it would be a good indication that the cartridge is at fault. Will let you all know further on an update. Right now I still give it a 4 star.

    Doesn’t Work With Snow Leopard
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I really liked my P1006, which I bought six months ago – emphasis on “liked”. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of upgrading my Mac to the new “Snow Leopard” operating system, and then discovered that HP has no printer driver for the P1006, rendering my printer unusable. As far as I can tell from Apple discussion forums and the like, HP is vague on when they will have a driver available.

So, until HP confirms that they have a new printer driver for the P1006:

    1) Don’t upgrade to Snow Leopard if you are using a P1006 with a Mac.

    2) Don’t buy a P1006 with a new Mac – all new Macs have Snow Leopard pre-installed.
