All in all, I am very pleased with this unit.

Setup was quick and easy and the USB connection has always worked well for me. Scanning directly to a file (jpg or MS Word) is very nice. Scanning directly to PDF should have been added, but I use the freeware doPDF in it’s place.

My only complaint is that even in draft mode, you go through ink too fast. The cartridge is cheap (around $14) but it only last for I’ll guess 150-200 pages. Keep a spare cartridge on hand.

This is a cheap cheap cheap printer with large buggy software that freezes and terrible ink capacity. You are not saving money with this printer, only wasting time. HP needs to step up and develop better software if it wants to be taken seriously beyond big box store budget products. Ive seen this across the board with other products from this company. Step up and buy a decent entry level laser jet, unless you need color. Save time, frustration, and money in the long run.

Small Printer, Small Cartridges, Small Price, Big Headache!
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
OK OK – I know I got it cheap but I expected more than this as I ALWAYS buy HP Printers and have always loved them. I bought this printer because it could do everything and was small – I could take it on business trips! That part is good. I am now done traveling and it is in my home office. Not up to HP usual standards – the cartridges run out after 10 – 15 pieces of paper printing and I am not kidding. It is costing me a fortune in ink. If you should mistakenly jam a piece of paper in there and you have to turn off the printer to clear it – then turn it back on, you then have to reboot your computer to get it to connect to the computer again. It’s frustrating and I wish I had spent a bit more to get a printer that can keep up with my business. I guess it is good for someone who does a lot of scanning, but not a lot of printing.

High Quality, All-in-One, HP Officejet with fax
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
HP Officejet All-in-One with fax. Usual HP quality, Vista-compatible. (If you have just a slightly older printer that is not Vista-compatible, I do not think the remedies offered by HP tech support will solve this problem. I spent literally hour after hour with a slightly older HP All-in-One trying to get the scanner to work using HP tech support without fixing the problem. These were problems due to Vista incompatibility that HP could not fix.)

This new Officejet 4315 has exceeded my expectations and has worked very well. After a very negative experience with my HP All-in-One C-3180, I took a chance and ordered another HP product stating it was Vista-compatible. My faith in HP printers has been restored! I was almost to the point of buying another brand. Would definitely purchase this item again. Thanks HP for finally getting your act together for Vista compatibility upgrades in your new products!

The seller shipped this super quick, product came in excellent condition, easy set up, working in no time at all. Great deal and value, just what I was looking for. Did not get the full five stars because of the scan speed, but other than that very good product….

Great, except it DEVOURS expensive ink! REAL cost = superexpensive!
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Okay, when I bought this I thought it was great: perfect price, works well, the Amazon reviews were positive. i liked it so much the first few days that my husband bought one for his office. And it DOES work well. It hasn’t had any glitches, it prints smoothly, and at this bargain price, well, GREAT, right? Well, there’s a huge problem: This printer gobbles its tiny ink cartridges so so SO fast that you lose any savings you might have had buying new ink every two seconds. This sucker runs out of cartridges every week. It’s unbelievable! The cartridges cost about $25 in my neighborhood. This is a GIANT expense and waste. Yesterday was the last straw: I bought brand-new cartridges to print out a copy of a manuscript, but after printing out five chapters (about 120 pages), the black ink was already GONE. That’s just unacceptable! And I know that it isn’t a problem with a leak, or a problem with my machine specifically, because the same thing happens w/my husband’s office HP Officejet 4315 All-in-One. I wish I’d know this before. This is now, like, a $500 printer!!!!!!!!! So my advice is, don’t buy this unless you plan to use it only rarely for printing or copying. If you’re buying it mainly for outgoing faxes and the occasional copy or small print job, it’s great.

    Paper jams constantly
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I’ve owned 4-5 HP printers over the years, and this is the only one I’ve found to to completely unsatisfactory. The paper jams constantly, and when it does, you can’t delete the print job — I usually have to reboot the printer AND the computer to clear out the printer queue. When it does print, the machine is s-l-o-w. However it does one thing very fast: eat through print cartridges. So…it’s cheap to buy but very expensive to run. On the positive side, I can say that the print quality is fine. I guess this printer could be OK if you have very low volume requirements. To be fair, I have overtaxed what it was designed to deliver. But there’s no excuse for constant jamming. Bottom line: this machine wastes hours of my time each month. Or did. I’ve just ordered a n Officejet 6310 to replace it.

As usual, and especially in the field of printers, HP provides a superb product, which produces absolutely quality results. The setup of this machine is incredibly simple.

Also, I would be remiss if I did not mention the fantastic price of $54.98 I paid by purchasing it on Amazon.com.

Haven’t had any problems with it not working, but fax feature wasn’t compatible with my DSL service, which is the main reason I bought it. And you can only scan and copy single pages–not helpful if you find something in a book you want to copy.

as conan says “good for the money”
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The product is easy to use but if you are using it on a desktop it takes up a lot of room, not in its foot print but in the space it takes when the leaves are open for the feeder and the printed pages. Printing speed is slow and the ink carts are used up quickly. If you are not a frequent faxer it’s fine and you dont need many copies as well. This machine is meant for light use not an office machine.

  16. TK Says:

    Disposable printer
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The HP 4315 is nothing special. It is a disposable printer. It is cheaply made and bound to fail within a year; at least that is my experience. After my first one failed I bought a second in order to use my stock of ink cartridges. Now the second one is experiencing frequent cartridge jams. You would think that since HP makes good money on the ink, they would build a unit that would last. I am buying cartridges one at a time from now on. I never found the ink to go very far. I don’t do much printing but buy cartridges 6 to 8 times per year.

Worst Computer Product ever purchased in 30 years
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This product I ordered based on the positive reviews. Yes there were negative ones. What I did not realize is that all the positive ones sort to the top and the negative ones are at the bottom. Also, I wondered why sometimes I would see a review twice. I found out when trying to review this product. Your review does not show up for sometime. This product cannot be installed from the windows add hardware feature or you may risk the product not being installed correctly. Please read the instructions and follow. DO not just try to install like any normal printer ever purchased. This one you are not supposed to attach the printer until step 17. I will be sending this back. I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to get it to work. I had to buy a new inkjet cartridge one of them was defective and it will not align without two function cartridges installed. I never go the scanner to work. The fax would function and you could print in fax function. It would however never print from the printer itself. It kept giving an error Officejet is offline when it is was online. I trouble shot the cable by using it on another printer. The USB cable worked on a Lexmark printer I had available to test with at my cabin. I just wanted something inexpensive and have owned at least three other officejets that have all worked great. This is one not worth your time and effort. I troubleshot with HP who told me to ship it back and obtain another one. Believe me it is not worth the time, trouble, expense and effort. Obtain another printer. Thanks, (Also Amazon you should have a negative rating system. This one does not deserve a single star but that is the lowest available for a product.) In my opinion that also is misleading the consumer.

    Died quickly
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Within three months of moderate to light use there were error messages flashing on the screen of this unit and the printer was inoperable. I went through the time and expense of buying head cleaner products and replacing ink cartridges, per the advice of HP customer service, but the printer would simply not work. The scanner does work. Customer service told me it is not under warranty which I have not been able to comprehend. I gave up and bought Cannon model that I had earlier avoided only because of its bigger footprint.

    Works well for a while
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I have had this printer for about 2 years and then suddenly I started getting error messages like the paper was jammed when there was no jam. Lately it has been non-functional since I keep getting the message that the carriage can’t move and that I should clear the obstruction. Of course there is no obstruction.

The ink gauge is inaccurate but I have gotten use to it. I can get weeks or months of printing done after the low ink message comes on. The fax is temperamental at best.

I guess I should be happy that it lasted 2 years. I am looking for a replacement .

Amazingly inexpensive, works as advertised, Mac compatible
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
We purchased this multifunction machine mainly as a printer, with a need for occasional FAX transmission. It was simple to set-up, prints quickly and clearly, and settings can be changed easily on the front panel. The one disappointment was lack of operability through the USB port of our AirPort. I know that it’s inexpensive because the supplies are expensive, but the price was still half of many similar models, and it is more attractive and compact.

The HP 4315 All-in-One printer is aptly named if by All-in-One they mean frustration, anger, and wasted time ALL rolled into one. It frequently locked up in a print queue when I ran it on my old XP system. Now that I’m running it (or attempting to) on my Vista system, it does the same thing. Only difference is under XP I could occasionally get it to work. Under Vista, I’ve uninstalled and re-installed the driver and the diagnostics. Nothing has ever printed. DON’T try to use this printer (or any HP printer?) on Vista. Also, it’s in a circular hell of sorts. The hung file can’t be printed but it also can’t be deleted. HP help (across the pond) was of no help. I’ll try Kodak — save some money, some ink, and a whole lot of frustration.

    Worked Good, While it Worked
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I used this primarily for printing, and sometimes as a scanner and it worked fine. However, after less than a year it just stopped feeding the paper. Can’t get the rollers to roll the paper through (tried everything, different size papers, etc). It’s not worth the cost to get it fixed, so will probably get a different brand.

    HP Officejet 4315 All-in-One Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier (Q8081A#ABA)

I bought this printer well over a year ago because I wanted a small, QUIET, multi-function unit. This one fits the bill perfectly. It cost less than $100 and does everything I need.

I’ve seen some reviews that say it’s cheaply made and uses too much ink. To be fair, it IS made mostly of plastic (aren’t they all these days?) and the ink cartridges are small but it’s all relative, depending on what you print and how often. I make business cards, print Word documents, spreadsheets, some pictures and art. My black cartidge lasts several months. The color does get used up faster but again, it depends on how much you print and how often. The scanner works beautifully for me and will scan/copy small items like receipts & such if you put them in a carrier – a paper-on-the-bottom, clear-plastic-on-the-top ’sandwich’ that I saved from my previous multifunction device, since the 4315 doesn’t come with one (my only complaint). It feeds very nicely and you can put all sorts of bits in it.

The 4315 installs easily, works smoothly, is uncomplicated and functional. It’s an excellent value for the price.

Now if HP would only make a reasonably priced, large-format (13×19″ at least), multi-function, wireless unit, I’d be in printer heaven! (ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION HP?!!!!!!!)

IF YOU WANT A FAX MACHINE DON’T BUY THIS!!!!!!!!
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I purchased this to use for a fax machine. It to date has only worked once. I had to put one sheet in at a time, because they all go through together. That’s bad enough. When I tried to fax today It wouldn’t work at all!!!! The printer seems to work ok.

  27. Jeremy Says:

    Decent hardware, poor Mac support
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I have now had this printer for a few months and can say the print quality is good.

Scanning works well. The buttons on the front provide quick access to scanning.

I cannot comment on fax performance and I imagine copying performance is similar to scanning, which works well.

I have a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard and I find the included HP software is over-complicated and confusing at times (I am a software developer, not a computer neophyte). I can always get it to do what I want it to do but it is awkward and irritating at times.

Another minor issue I have is with the timing of the “low ink” warnings. They’re too early. It seems you can still print quite a bit (perhaps 20-30 pages) when the ink is “low”.

We originally bought this guy as a backup for our Canon scanner, printer, makes lemonade, etc., printer. However, the Canon soon died and well, this one easily adapted to our main computer usage. The guy at Best Buy told us to stick with HP since printers are their specialty and recommended this one. Only thing bad about it is that it really doesn’t like it when you use a refilled cartridge over a new one. It will jam on you and tell you it has an obstruction if the cartridge is even slightly off. Caused a lot of stress until HP told us the problem. It’s worked great ever since – faxes are particularly easy to send and receive and it feeds multiple sheets at once. If I could change anything it would be the scanner. I’d like one that is flat, like a copier, so I can scan larger items to sell on ebay, i.e. book covers, etc. Other than that, this thing has been going strong for over 2.5 years and is just one of those things you get once in awhile that you’re glad you had the help from the salesclerk. Great product – look for the newer version too which is now black. Highly recommend!
