Extremely slow for occasional use.
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Once you have started printing, the print speed is pretty fast but you could grow old waiting for that first page. It goes through all sorts of loud noises and does that for quite a while before the first page prints. It goes through a similar, although shorter, process after the last page is printed. Why HP would market such a machine to occasional users is a mystery to me. I’m sorry I bought it.

Great Printer for home usage
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I read several of the reviews here and found out that 1) That if you have a business this would not be your printer to get but if you use it for home and occasional usage then it is a safe bet.
I decided to purchase this printer because I liked several of the features and the price was really nice. Printer prices have really come down in the last few years.
Pros:
Wireless Printing
Scan/Fax/Copy/Print
Beautiful print job on regular paper
Photo printing is great too.
4 Ink cartridges designed to allow much better printing quality…and I agree!
Cons:
Fax is analog only
Noisy
Slow but good for home usage…if you plan on printing mega amounts at a time then buy an industrial printer.
Setup time with software…1/2 hour (but who really cares!)
Overall, I am pretty satisfied. For the price you can’t beat it. Like I said, for home usage it is excellent but business printing I would buy a more expensive model that can print really fast.

I’m loving it!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have had this printer for a month now. If you are setting it up for wired, its easy. If you are planning on going wireless it helps to know that there is website (mentioned in the user’s manual) that will help you with setup. If you know how to access your router online you can go there and add the printer’s ip address and MAC address to your approved device list. The ip address to access Linksys and Cisco is 192.168.1.1. Good luck! If you need to know printer information first click on the Setup button use arrow button to go to option 2. Print Report, click ok, use arrow to go to 9. Network configuration page. Click on OK button to print it.
I purchased this printer because I run a dual operating system with XP and Linux. I wanted a printer that could be used with both. After going to the Linux printer site I found the all in one device we owned did NOT have drivers for Linux. So I shopped around. Speed was not an important factor. Its just for home use. But I found on draft it is relatively quick. Granted our Laser printers at work will blow it away. But I love all the features. I tested everything. The scanner, copier, fax as well as printer, of course. Everything works great.
It does make noise when it aligns the page but not unbearable. I purchased the XL ink cartridges at the same time because I knew the starter ink is not full when you get it. I have printed pictures with beautiful color tone. I love it. And would certainly recommend it to others.

Less than ok printer
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought this printer at Costco because I thought it would be a good buy even though it had negative reviews on several sites. I had a printer error as soon as I installed the printer head and the printer ink cartridges. The instructions stated that I had to clean the head but it was new so I new that it was an internal error. I finally got it to work properly after removing and reinstalling the ink heads. The other con that this printer has is that it makes too much noise even when you are not using it. I guess the print heads adjust after a print job and this is very annoying. The last con is that the printer gets an error every 20mins or so even if you are not using it. The error is cleared when I push the “ok” button but do you want to seriously so this every 20mins? The pro is that I was able to print and scan work in pdf format. I am going to return this printer this weekend and I don’t know what printer to get next

I have not ad much opotunity to use my printer, yet, but what I have done has been more than satisfactory. The only difficulty I encountered was installing the ink cartridges. The directions were a little vague.

This was the easiest piece of equipment to set up. It works great. It’s quiet. It’s wireless. It prints, copies, faxes, scans – all wirelessly.

Officejet Printer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had a Lexmark printer for years and it performed well for me. When it finally bit the dust, a techie friend suggested the HP Officejet and suggested purchasing through Amazon. The printer is fantastic. It can be set to print two-sided automatically which is wonderful. I test printed a page that had photographs and print on both sides. It looks like a professional job; crisp, clear and true-to-life colors. It was a snap to set up following the instructions. Would highly recommend the product to others particularly through Amazon because I saved a lot of money. A friend purchased a similar but lower end HP through another source and paid more than I did.

BAD FOR FAXING
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
While I like a lot of things about this printer – the fax options are very frustrating. We use this machine to fax in orders & I have already had a few orders botched. If you fax from glass (by scanning), you can not fax more than one page at a time. You can, however, fax more than one page with the manual feed feature – but you must stay on the ball or it will immediatley send. This is definatly a step down from my previous HP.

excellent product, no problems with my Vista or XP laptops or desktops
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This printer is excellent. I set it up on my desktop which runs XP, and on our two laptops which run XP and Vista. It works perfect on all three computers. Yes, the installation was time consuming and had to be installed on each computer separately, but for all the features that you get, it is well worth it. The installation manual is great but please make sure to read it first. It also makes troubleshooting extremely simple. The manual stated possible port and firewall issues during installation, which was a very simple fix on both XP and Vista laptops. Once the necessary ports were added to allow access to the network and hp firewalls removed, everything was smooth sailing.
I have used most of the features so far. I love the Scan to Document feature since I can readily scan from the instrument and have it automatically open up on my Vista laptop. I also love the duplex printing. It comes with two printing options. I use the fast dry option which saves on both time and ink. It also gives a couple beeps when it is done printing, scanning etc. so you know when it is complete. Other reviewers reported their all-in-one to be noisy. I have not experienced this. Maybe I just got lucky.
Too much more positives to say but not enough time. Nutshell, I highly recommend it.

Cheap AIO that works well.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have a home network with both Windows and Linux boxes. This AIO works well with all of the machines. Linux compatibility is one of the reasons that I went with this one.
Copy/scan/fax worked out of the box without installing any software or connecting to a computer, which is a major plus for me. The AIO has a neat built-in web server that allows you to scan pictures to jpeg files and text to pdf files without having to install any software/drivers.
Setting up printing is trivial on both Windows and Linux. I didn’t use the installation CD, instead I just went to the hp site to download the latest 25MB (English only) driver for Windows and the hplip site, the 15MB driver for Linux, because I’m not interested in the bundled OCR stuff.
Connecting the AIO to our wireless router is straight forward as well and never had any issue. I did setup a static DHCP lease for the AIO so it always gets the same IP address. I suspect this make it work better with less capable clients (older Windows XP boxes with no mDNS/Bonjour/Zeroconf stuff.) The print quality exceeds my expectation for an inkjet (I’ve used Canon, Lexmark and Brother.)
Now the downside: coming from an HP LaserJet 5L which is still working after 12 years of moderate use, the AIO is much more noisy doing stuff. The realignment thing after printing is annoyingly noisy as well. It’s no way as fast as 35ppm as advertised. Two-sided printing is way slower as it needs to wait about 10 seconds for the ink on one-side to “dry” before printing on the other side. Two-sided copy is even trickier: you have to feed two one-sided paper to get one two-sided copy in the two-sided copy mode! Otherwise, it’ll just print one side and wait 10 seconds for one-side to “dry” and continue on to print a blank page on the other side. My other two-sided printing experiences are from more expensive laser printers and a $150 Samsung ML something that worked much better doing two-sided printing.
For the price I paid ($149 shipped), I think it’s a very good AIO for moderate home/small business use.

Decent printer but don’t buy for photos!
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
It’s a decent printer for normal everyday document printing. I just wish I would have investigated the quality of photos better before I purchased. The quality is just not up to snuff and I’ll no doubt have to buy a second photo-only printer to do my snapshots which will defeat the great deal I got on this printer (or so I thought). They just are so soft compared to my former Canon printer or even sending them off to Walgreen’s.

Good buy for the price point
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This produces a nice crisp printout. With 24lb paper, it looks just like a laser printer. The only drawback has to do with the number of pages it could print before replacing the cartridges. My guess is that I printed between 300-350 pages and all of the ink needed to be replaced.

Great Quality – No Photo Paper Tray
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Overall a great all-in-one. I bought this for my mom who is not very computer savvy and she’s done quite well with it. Wireless printing and scanning is great when you want to keep the device out of site or limit the wires. The only complaint I have is that this model does not have a dual paper tray for regular printing and photo printing. Sure, it supports both, but you have to swap out the paper each time.

so far so good
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Did not have any issues with installation, although a little slow. Newer model allows for editing
of installation re: desired software,104 KB on my preferences. Disable anti virus to speed up the process. Have Comcast digital voice and no problem with fax, possible fix by HP or Comcast regarding earlier complaints. It does shake, rattle & roll a little bit,but it’s tolerable. Have only hooked it up to XP desktop and wireless works fine at short distance. Will hook it up to Mac laptop and give it a try. Just installed it,so my opinion may be premature. Price was right for a AIO. I,m no techie
and have no complaints so far.

HP 6500 Wireless Printer
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
First, I think the HP6500 Printer is a great printer for Home/Home Office Use. I would have rated it 5 out of 5 except that there are 2 things that are annoying me. One is that I haven”t figured out how to get the printer to recognize my 2 other pc’s. It looks like the printer software has to be installed on both of them, which is a pain. The second problem is that something in the software is causing a problem with my TCP/IP connection. It interferes with the ability to get on the network and I’ve had to reboot my router to get things working again. I don’t quite understand this. But the printing is fast, and sharp. I really like the duplex printing as well.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Very nice and full of features.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The first reason for buying this printer was it’s networking capability. We have ours wired to the router via a gigabit switch and this makes it very convenient since it is not dependent on a running PC. The printer offers bi-directional communication so it not only lets you print from within the network but also scan and fax which is very attractive. The individual ink cartridges are a plus too. You only change the color that is empty, not wasting the remainder of the other colors as in older models. There is an SD Card slot which I have not used yet but I’m sure it will come in handy some day.
Simplicity is key with this printer. Want to scan a document and send it to any PC in the network? Just put the original and select the computer from the detected computers in the network displayed in the LCD display, select document type and off you go. Let’s not forget about two-sided printing, it does that too.
Overall I am extremely satisfied with this printer. It replaced an older HP PSC as well as a Lexmark, which was just nothing but trouble and expensive on the supplies.
Would I recommend this product? Definitely Yes. It is also very simple to setup and uses minimal resources on the PC.

ink system failure a problem
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This printer only worked a few days before it began having ink system failure issues. Trouble shooting thru HP’s website and tech support would only bring temporary fixes. HP replaced the unit for a refurbished one, same model, and it had the same issues. I was never even able to set up the second one before the ink system failure message appeared and never able to print a single page. HP did kindly replace the two units for a new printer of a different model. I just received it and am hoping that the same issues don’t recur!

GREAT BUY

My order arrived very quickly; set-up took a while, but very easy to understand instructions. I have to print a lot on a daily bases, and even the ink that comes with the order last forever. A great purchase.

hideously complex and no go for windows 7
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The first thing you’ll notice about the printer is how hideously complicated it is. There is a huge “control panel” on the front with row upon row of buttons, dials, readouts, and keypads. I suppose this printer “does it all” if you can ever figure out how it all works.
And the real kick in the pants is that this is pretty much their flagship inkjet printer, yet it does not support windows 7. If you try to follow their directions in setting it up, and insert the disk that comes with it, it will tell you you are basically out of luck.
One of the real ironies about this product too is that to get to the user manual, you need to install the software, and the software won’t install because it tells you that it doesn’t support windows 7. AAARGH! I definitely regret buying this printer.

Easier to set up that I expected!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I did lots of research on finding a new AIO printer and I decided on this one because I liked all the features (fax, scan, automated 2-sided/ duplex printing). I read some reviews that it took some people 3 hours to set it up and I was pleased to clock myself at a 1.5 hour set up time (from opening the box to printing something from my laptop)! (By the way, I don’t work in the computer/ tech world and I don’t consider myself a tech expert or anything–I’m just an average person.)
Some people had software issues with Vista and I’m happy to report that the software set up worked perfectly, quickly, and easily with my two laptops that both have Vista. I admit that I’m not the most computer/ tech-savvy person and the set-up was easy for me
The directions that come with the printer are very basic/ illustrations only (no wording/ not much wording) but it made sense to me. It reminded me of putting together Ikea furniture (no words in their directions)–maybe because these companies sell internationally.
I timed the amount of time the printer waits for the first printed side to “dry” before it takes the paper back in and prints on the other side–it waits 18 seconds. To me, the ease of not having to take the paper out, flip it over, worry about curled corners that may ultimately jam the printer, was more than worth waiting those 18 seconds.
I printed out some color (very dense color) flyers and they turned out well, though not perfect. They also printed out suprisingly quickly to me–approx. 16 seconds per page (again, very dense color/ graphics). Yes, it’s not as fast as a laser printer. Also, the quality is not as nice as a laser printer either. My flyers had a couple of horizontal lines of darker ink ’shadows’ across it. If you are glancing at the flyer and holding it from arm’s length, you won’t notice the lines. However, if you’re studying the ink pattern on the flyer with a close eye, you may definitely notice it.
Another down side is that the printer is a bit on the noisy side, in my opinion, and it makes a lot of “set up/ resetting” noises as some other reviews have spoken of. It makes these noises when you turn on the printer and after you’ve finished printing a document, etc. The noises it makes after it finishes printing something is louder and longer than the noises it makes when you just turn the machine on.
Unfortunately, I have not used the fax, scan, and wireless options yet so I cannot speak on those parts of the printer.
Hope this helps!

Even HP experts could not get this printer to work properly
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
HP “instant help” worked diligently for about 8 hours and could not get the Office Jet 6500 printer to work on my system. It was not the fault of the help, as they really worked hard. It was the printer installation software that did not work on my Windows XP system. I was pleased by how Amazon made it easy to return the printer. My decision to abandon further effort to get the printer to work was based on the concern that even if HP were able to get it to work, after the warrantee expired, I would be up a creek without a paddle, if, say, I had to install the printer on a different computer. I then bought a Brother MFC 490CW all-in-one from Amazon for about $30 less and installed it easily and without help. Please note that I have had great success with my HP 2700n laser jet printer. In that case the installation worked easily, and I needed no help. Not all HP printers have problems, but the 6500 sure did on my system.

Very Disappointing
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought this All-In-One because of the wonderful previous HP All-In-One I had. I have been extremely disappointed, and wish I had just kept the older version. I have had to redo the set up several times. Additionally, the wireless does not seem to work well; I finally gave up and just use the USB cable. Finally, it is currently not working because of an “Ink System Failure.” HP is sending a replacement part; however, I am without access to a printer, etc. for 5 – 7 business days. This is a huge problem for someone with a small business and who is taking college courses. In the four months I have had this printer, it has not worked more than it has worked.

Wireless my #$@
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This printer simply does not work as advertised. I wish I had read the CNET and Amazon reviews before wasting my money on yet another malfunctioning HP Printer tied to bloated, ineffective software. My experience:
- I run Vista (alas), have an n-band router, and the router-printer-computer are within five feet of each other
- The printer is part of my network, and about 1 out of 10 times the printer and the computer speak to each other
- The other nine of ten times the printer has taken itself offline, cannot find the computer, or needs to be unplugged and rebooted
- It takes me on average five to ten minutes to scan one document from the time the printer first fails to my last reboot of printer and computer
- Software help is useless
- Quality of black and white scans is awful
- Whoever wrote the 5 Star review for this clunker either works for HP or is that kid from Heroes who can communicate with machines

Excellent Wireless Printer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We have owned this printer for around 6 weeks; it works as advertised and has been very reliable. We regularly use all the features- wireless printing, scanning, copying and as a fax machine- it works every time and we have never had a paper jam while printing or using the automatic sheet feeder. After a lot of use, we got a warning that the black cartridge was running low so I installed one of the XL replacements. This printer is a high quality, well designed office machine that meets our needs perfectly. I highly recommend it.

Unless I got a Lemon, This Machine is Truly Awful
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought this machine to replace another HP (which conveniently broke down one month after the warranty expired!). Installing the software is a real pain. It takes about 25 minutes and if there is the slightest error, it tells you to uninstall the software (another 15 minutes) reboot and start over again. I have done this (so far) four times, even though I disabled all virus software and extraneous programs before installing. I finally got it to work, but a week later the “Solution Center” kept saying it was disconnected (it wasn’t) but “solution center” told me to reinstall the full software suite yet again. This I did. It worked for a while and then the same thing happened again. Notwithstanding the installation problems, my machine (and it may very well be a lemon) when it worked was the loudest, clunckiest, machine I have ever used. All printers move slightly when working, but the amount of body english on this machine while working was so extreme that I am certain it would have physically shook itself to death very soon. (To be cynical, maybe HP engineers have designed it so it will break down just after the warranty expires). I will try one more time to get the software installed and working, and then it will probably go back to Staples. And I will not buy another HP machine. For sure!

Nothing Earthshattering
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Ownership Time: 2 weeks
Client Operating Systems: Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista Business
HP Client Software: Installed from CD provided with product without issue, did turn off Symantec Endpoint Corporate AntiVirus on Vista machine as recommended.
Functions Used: Copy, Print, Wireless
Pros: Clean printing; Detected WEP enabled wireless without issue; Duplex tray
Cons: Slow…takes forever to warm up compared to my old Lexmark AIO; 4 print cartridges
Summary: Print quality sufficient for price range, draft seems to be a little darker than our old Lexmark X7170. If you do not copy often standing at the machine can become boring; but if you print occasionally and do not wait at the print for the output a non-issue. The device webpage is a nice feature (right click on device in Windows and select ‘View device webpage’)

User-friendly and great features, works on Mac and PC home network!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
UPDATE! I was recently photo sharing with a friend, but my memory card reader wouldn’t read her SD card, neither would my camera. Her camera read the card just fine but she didn’t have the cable to plug directly into my computer. So- we tried putting the SD memory card into this HP printer and voila! The printer read the card AND wirelessly transferred ALL (200+) of her pictures to my computer! It even turned them (portrait, landscape) appropriately, which was a huge plus because we were going through about 1000 pictures (local hot air balloon festival) total. I was just amazed- I thought surely I’d have to sit by the printer and select each individual picture to send to my computer but it sent them all with no problem! Just get this printer, it’s amazing.
I purchased the OJ6500 two days ago. Installation was a breeze on my MacBook with Leopard, 10.5.7. The “quick” installation guide takes you through getting the printer set up, i.e. plugged in, inserting ink cartridges.
There is a separate manual for setting up the wireless and fax. The wireless connection is set up through your computer, as long as you know your network name and WEP password there shouldn’t be a problem. The wireless manual also has several pages of trouble-shooting ideas in case the wireless connection isn’t working on the printer, or the computer can’t find the printer on the network, etc.
I have used the duplex printing successfully, which was one of the main reasons I bought this particular printer, wireless being the other. The duplex printing is a bit slow, so I probably won’t be printing out my thesis on it, but great for saving paper with smaller documents and I certainly didn’t expect it to be lightning-fast duplex printing.
There is also a separate manual for setting up the fax, but as several other reviewers have commented, the fax capabilities don’t work with digital phone, so I haven’t even tried to set this up as the fax ability wasn’t a priority for me.
I have already used both the scanner and copier as well. I scanned in a number of old pictures which turned out great. The printer has a ton of scanning options which makes scanning pictures in particular a snap- you can choose to scan into a .jpeg format directly into the HP Photosmart program, or for fellow mac users, scan as a .jpeg directly into iPhoto. You can also scan in as a .pdf format, which is extremely handy as well.
The only weird glitch I’ve had with all of the printing, scanning, and copying I’ve done so far is that sometimes the printer can’t find my computer. You can scan two ways- select directly from the printer, which asks you to select the computer to scan to and the format to scan (.jpeg, .pdf) or you can control it from your computer. When installed, the HP Device Manager application allows you to control the scanning/faxing from your computer, which gives you the same options of format, etc. So part way through my scanning, I was using the buttons on the printer itself and it stopped “seeing” my computer on the network, so I couldn’t select any computer to send the scan to. But when I opened the HP device manager, it scanned perfectly into my computer. The printer now is recognizing my computer again, so it’s kind of sporadic I suppose.
One final note, my boyfriend has a desktop with Windows XP and wireless capabilities, and he also installed the software and is printing just fine via wireless. So overall I’m extremely happy with this printer, I think it was a great purchase and hope it will get me through my last year of grad school with printing forms and papers, etc. I purchased the printer from Sam’s Club and also priced the replacement ink package- the printer has an optional “XL” black cartridge which is supposed to print up to ~1200 pages, so the package that included the XL black, and the three separate colors was $70, just so you have an idea of how much replacement inks will cost. The smaller color cartridges are said to print about 700 pages I believe. I’m very happy with the purchase- happy shopping!

Great to have the laptop downstairs & the printer upstairs, keeps the wife happy, not having to look & listen to it, love all the features, especially the fax & scanner, is it as good as the more expensive professional office machines? .Of course not, but it’s great for a small office or home use. I’d recommend it to anyone

Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Overall I love the wireless printer. Printing is clear and fast. The only issue I have with this amazing printer is the price of ink and finding it. Went everywhere to find it and every store was sold out, finally found it and cost just over $80 to replace the ink. If you are purchasing the printer just remember ink right now isn’t cheap. Ink that comes with the printer doesn’t last long.
